Expressive Therapies

Expressive therapies are utilized when it is difficult for clients to express themselves verbally.  These may include art therapy, music, storytelling, or sand tray work.

Some of these therapies, such as sandtray and art therapy may be used following a very specific protocol or may be utilized less formally and integrated with another form of therapy.

Play therapy can be used with anyone but is very effective with young children because play is their language.  It is most effective in helping them express themselves.

A well trained play therapist can assist a child with their problems in a short span of time.  Ordinary toys are used   to elicit play that will be therapeutic for the child.  Occasionally special toys are used such as the green monster which is neither human nor animal but which can be pulled apart.  For self-regulation, or for teens, structured games can be helpful.

Sand tray work is a particularly powerful form of therapy that taps into deep feelings. Children can be told to tell a story using miniature figurines. Adults will make a tray by choosing the miniatures that “call to” them and then process results with the therapist.

Sometimes it is helpful to utilize toys that appeal to all the senses, such as sensory tables with various tacitly stimulating contents, rain sticks and other sound toys, or musical toys.

Traditional Talk Therapy

A variety of therapies are provided that could be considered talk therapy. These include but are not limited to CBT, DBT, insight oriented therapy, desensitization, skills training, and solution focused therapy.  Most often the goals of these therapies are reached by talking and problem solving together. However at times it may be helpful to use books or DVDs.

  • Neurodevelopmental Disorders (Autism, ADHD, Intellectual Disabilities, Specific Learning Disabilities,)

  • Traumatic Brain Injury

  • Memory Decline(Dementia)

  • Executive Function Weakness

  • Anoxic Brain Injury

  • Metabolic Brain Injury (Substance Abuse)

Our evaluations also include an assessment of adaptive behavior/functioning, academic achievement, and emotional functioning. Our goal is to provide quality clinical care to patients and their families by closely working with referring professionals to ensure the comprehensive treatment methods are provided.

Our Evaluations provide valuable information in many significant ways and may be used for:

  • Early detection of mild cognitive deficit, often critical in assisting physicians with diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s Dementia.

  • Establishing a cognitive baseline to assist in later diagnostic assessments.

  • Assisting in decision making regarding return to school, work, driving, sports, and independent living.

  • Assisting in determining a patient’s capacity to consent to treatment or manage their own affairs.

We offer the ability for referring facilities to create a secure online portal where referrals can easily be uploaded. Additionally, upon completion of the evaluation reports, they can be uploaded to the facility portal for immediate access. For facilities not equipped for this type of exchange, referrals and reports can be faxed.
